Together, we’re a force. Alone, a target.

By Branko Brkic, Founder Project Kontinuum

Most of us in media work harder and risk much to produce or support journalism that matters. At the same time, trust in our institutions and people is woeful. Propaganda, noise and open attacks make the truth more difficult to find and so much easier to ignore.

We keep going anyway, seeking the truth, while also trying new things to refresh our craft. Not for the money. Because of our commitment to it.

Strength in unity

But we’re not powerless: we have two weapons the critics don’t: our pages, and each other. Alone, a newsroom can be a target. Together, we can be a force.

28 September, World News Day, is a moment to put both weapons to work.

What started in 2018 as a Canadian industry campaign with 17 founding news brands has grown into a global movement, with more than 1,000 news organisations and support agencies across 108 countries taking part last year. The momentum for 2026 is building, particularly in places where journalists are under attack and solidarity is needed.

Campaign kit

World News Day is not a fundraiser. We ask just two things: show and explain what goes into your best journalism – don’t just claim it – and show that it is part of something bigger.

We provide the campaign materials – digital banners, two videos, print ads and social cards – as well as cartoons and op-eds from leading media voices. What you do with them is up to you: commit an ad page, a banner, a broadcast slot, a social post, or simply consider publishing an op-ed.

Some of the world’s biggest media groups are joining World News Day. Some of the toughest independents are planning their own content.

The cost of sitting out this year’s World News Day may be another year defending journalism’s value alone.
