Rob Pelinka Reveals Why Lakers Extended J.J. Redick
The Los Angeles Lakers recently announced that they had extended head coach JJ Redick’s contract.
The Lakers wanted a stable coaching staff, and they are going to get that.
It sounds like it was an easy choice for LA’s front office, and general manager Rob Pelinka explained why the Lakers moved forward with a Redick extension.
“Confidence and belief. We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us to continue to define the culture of Lakers excellence. We just wanted to make a clear statement that this is what we believe in, what we’re going to lean into, and what our players are going to mold into as we continue to develop the identity. I think having long-term planning is helpful as we build this team going forward,” Pelinka said, via Mike Trudell.

There were a lot of questions about Redick when he joined the franchise last summer.
Most people were shocked that LA would hand the keys of the kingdom to someone who had no coaching experience.
Yes, Redick has spent years in the league, but he had no time on a coaching bench, even as an assistant.
With LeBron James’ time in the NBA running out and a title window seemingly closing, Lakers fans were demanding a lot from Redick.
He instantly got to work and showed how much he cared about the team and creating a winning culture.
The Lakers weren’t able to go as far as they wanted last season, but Redick received rave reviews from fans who could tell how much his heart was in it.
The expectations are even higher this year, especially since Luka Doncic is about to start his first full season in LA.
Redick has the faith and support of the team, the front office, and the fans.
He had made a positive impression so far, and 2025-26 is all about building upon that.
