Josh Tongue Ruled Out of England ODI Series Against Australia with Toe Injury

England fast bowler Josh Tongue has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Australia due to a persistent injury to his left big toe. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Tongue will return to the United Kingdom immediately for further medical assessment.

The injury is a recurrence of a problem Tongue sustained during England’s recent ODI tri-series in Pakistan, where it was reportedly aggravated during a match against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. His withdrawal from the ODI squad is a setback for a bowling unit looking to establish rhythm under the new white-ball coaching structure featuring Brendon McCullum.

Squad Depth and Warm-up Performance

Despite the loss of Tongue, England does not currently plan to name a replacement player. The coaching staff is opting to rely on the existing pace depth within the traveling party, which includes Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Henry Crocombe, and Jamie Overton. This decision follows a successful start to the tour’s preparation phase.

On November 7, England secured a victory in a 50-over warm-up match against Western Australia at the WACA. The performance helped alleviate immediate concerns regarding the bowling attack’s potency:

  • Team Result: England defeated Western Australia by 92 runs in a 50-over warm-up on November 7.

Series Schedule and Test Outlook

The ODI series against Australia is scheduled to begin on November 13 at Perth Stadium, followed by fixtures on November 15 in Adelaide and November 18 in Hobart. The quick turnaround between matches will test the conditioning of the remaining seamers, particularly with the high intensity expected in Australian conditions.

According to RTL Today, the decision to send Tongue home for assessment is aimed at ensuring he receives further medical evaluation. Medical staff are hopeful that early intervention in the UK will allow him to recover.

As reported by CricTracker, Tongue’s absence opens the door for younger bowlers like Baker and Crocombe to gain experience in the senior international setup. Both players will be looking to impress McCullum as England continues to refine its white-ball roster ahead of future ICC tournaments.
