EA Closes BioWare and Cancels Next Mass Effect in Post-Privatization Restructure

Electronic Arts (EA) announced the closure of BioWare on October 21, 2026, ending the 31-year history of the studio responsible for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. The move comes as part of a significant corporate restructuring following EA’s transition to a private company earlier this year.

As a direct consequence of the closure, development on the next entry in the Mass Effect series has been canceled. The shutdown involves laying off approximately 50 employees directly from BioWare, contributing to a broader reduction of 400 positions across EA’s global workforce.

The decision to shutter one of gaming’s most recognized RPG developers follows EA’s $55 billion leveraged buyout in August 2026. That deal, led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, reportedly placed roughly $18 billion in debt on the company’s books.

EA’s restructuring involves 400 layoffs across the company as it manages an $18 billion debt load.

BioWare, founded in 1995 and acquired by EA in 2007, had faced several years of fluctuating commercial performance. While the studio was lauded for its early work on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the original Mass Effect trilogy, more recent titles struggled to maintain that momentum. The studio’s latest release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024), reportedly failed to meet EA’s internal sales expectations.

The restructuring extends beyond BioWare’s Edmonton and Austin footprints. EA has also canceled a Sims-related project codenamed “Project Lotus” as part of the same cost-saving measures.

The closure marks a definitive shift in EA’s strategy under its new private ownership. By retiring the BioWare brand and canceling the next Mass Effect, the company is signaling a move away from the high-budget, single-player RPGs that defined the studio’s legacy in favor of projects with lower risk or higher monetization potential. There has been no official word on whether the intellectual property for Mass Effect or Dragon Age will be licensed to external developers or managed by other internal EA studios like Respawn or DICE in the future.
