76ers Could Make Surprising Move With Joel Embiid Amid Injury Report
The Philadelphia 76ers are probably the most disappointing team in the league during the 2024-25 NBA season as they sit toward the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
The 76ers came into the season with high hopes of being a contender after they signed Paul George as a free agent, along with other useful veteran players.
Unfortunately, Philadelphia has been hit hard by injuries to George, among others, most notably Joel Embiid.
Embiid has been one of the most injury-prone players in the league in recent years, and this season is no different as he has had trouble managing a knee injury.
Doctors and Embiid had been exploring options for treatment, but ultimately the 76ers decided to shut down the former MVP.
While Embiid will miss the remainder of the season, there’s a chance he could be forced to retire soon if he’s unable to stay healthy.
“76ers could petition for a ‘medical retirement’ for Joel Embiid if he’s unable to play a year from now, per Keith Smith (of Spotrac). ‘At that point, an independent doctor selected by the NBA and NBPA would examine Embiid. If agreed he can no longer play, his remaining contract would be wiped off the books for the Sixers,’” Legion Hoops wrote on X.

Embiid being forced to retire would be a massive blow to the Philadelphia organization, which had been hoping for him to get it to the NBA Finals.
When healthy, Embiid is one of the most dominant two-way players in the game, but that version of him might no longer exist.
