Luigi Mangione is a 26-year-old former Ivy League student who has been arrested as a suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He is a tech whiz and a high-achieving mathematical individual from Maryland, originally from Towson.
Mangione attended the prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore and was a valedictorian in 2016.
Mangione attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2020 with a master’s and bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics. Social media photos show he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. After graduating, Mangione worked as a software engineer for the online car sales company TrueCar, according to his LinkedIn page. His most recent address was in Hawaii, NYPD officials said.
He is the cousin of Maryland State Delegate Nino Mangione, a Republican. The Mangione family also runs a family foundation with nearly $4.5 million in assets, and they were longtime benefactors of Loyola University in Maryland, which named its aquatic center after them.
Mangione moved to Hawaii, where he lived for about six months in a co-working and co-living space in Honolulu. He was working remotely during that time.
Mangione had an active online presence, posting about his interests in science, technology, and artificial intelligence on platforms like X. He also maintained a Goodreads profile, reviewing and listing nearly 300 books, including the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynsk manifesto.
Mangione was taken into police custody after being recognized at a McDonald’s near Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was found to be carrying a 3D-printed pistol, a black silencer, a 2-page ‘manifesto’, and a fake New Jersey driver’s license.
Mangione has been charged with murder and four other counts: one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He is believed to have had a grudge against the medical community according to a 2-page ‘manifesto’ the police discovered, which may have motivated the killing. Mangione’s friends and acquaintances describe him as a natural leader and a well-liked individual but also mention that he had chronic back pain and was often in pain and underwent surgery to treat it. The New York Police Commissioner has confirmed Mangione’s arrest, and he is currently being held in custody in Pennsylvania, pending extradition to New York to stand trial.
