Publishers’ AI rights group SPUR doubles membership as The New York Times and AFP join
The Standards for Publisher Usage Rights (SPUR) coalition has announced that more than 40 publishers and industry representative bodies are joining the initiative, bringing its total membership to over 80 news publishers and industry organisations across 20 countries.
The new members span several major news organisations such as The New York Times, AFP, The Atlantic and The Economist, as well as national news industry associations and other industry bodies. These include Brazil’s National Association of Newspapers (ANJ), Argentina’s Asociación de Entidades Periodísticas Argentinas (ADEPA) and Mexico’s Alianza de Medios. The full list of new SPUR members is below.
SPUR first launched in February, with BBC, Financial Times, Guardian Media Group, Mediahuis, Sky News, Telegraph Media Group, the Associated Press and CMA Media as its founding members. In June, the group welcomed 30 new members in its first major expansion, including WAN-IFRA.

“More publishers joining SPUR shows growing support for fair rules on how AI companies use journalism,” said Ezra Eeman, Director of AI in Media at WAN-IFRA. “As a strategic partner, WAN-IFRA supports SPUR’s work to help publishers understand how their content is used and have a say in the terms. That matters to news organisations of all sizes, around the world.”
The SPUR coalition aims to establish standards and processes that help create a fair market for the use of publishers’ content in AI systems. The coalition is developing technical frameworks to give publishers control over their content while enabling AI platforms to license copyrighted material.
Earlier this year, SPUR published its Content Telemetry Standard, a draft standard intended to provide a technical foundation for AI agents and model builders to record how they use media content.
