Future Newsrooms now: Your input needed to set the standard for transformation

“What characterises the world’s most successful news organisations is a relentless commitment to evolving their newsrooms to meet ever-growing audience expectations,” says WAN-IFRA CEO Stig Ørskov.

“In today’s AI-driven era, where editorial tools, audience needs, and the competitive landscape are changing at unprecedented speed, how do editorial leaders shape newsrooms to deliver distinctive, relevant journalism?

‘Never before has it been more urgent to understand how newsrooms are adapting to structural change and to learn from the experiences of peers.’

That is why we have teamed up with FT Strategies to produce the Future Newsroom Study, which will show how newsrooms are adapting to profound structural change.

Designed to provide a clear, evidence-based picture of how editorial leaders are preparing their organisations for the years ahead, the research will examine:

  • How newsroom strategy is defined and executed
  • How AI and automation are being integrated into workflows
  • How organisational structures are evolving in response to audience needs
  • Where editorial investment priorities are shifting
  • Which skills and capabilities will define successful newsrooms

At a time when editorial teams are integrating AI, responding to audience fragmentation and managing significant cost pressures, the study to develop a “recurring global benchmark that helps newsroom leaders evolve operationally in response by providing detailed insights into newsroom strategy, operating models, skills and technology readiness,” says Lisa MacLeod, Director and Head of News,  FT Strategies.

“We are delighted to be undertaking such a seminal piece of research into the newsrooms at a time when the future is so uncertain for us all in the industry,” adds MacLeod.

“An incredibly rich repository of interview material with the world’s top strategic editorial thinkers forms the groundwork for a deep survey covering the most pressing issues of the day: AI and content, strategic positioning, news creators and new formats.

“Along with our partners in WAN-IFRA and Arc XP, and our advisory board, we are certain this work will become an indispensable guide to future planning and success for newsrooms globally.”

The findings will be presented in a flagship co-branded report, to be supported by Arc XP and launched at WAN-IFRA’s 77th World News Media Congress in Marseille in June.

The study will provide practical frameworks and global benchmarks to support newsroom leaders navigating transformation.

Your insights are crucial in defining the global benchmark for newsroom transformation and directly influence how the industry navigates the next phase of change.

Your responses will be completely anonymous and handled with the strictest confidentiality at all times.
