Details Emerge About Why Ben Johnson Turned Down Commanders Last Season
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is not only a top head-coaching candidate this offseason, but he was one last year.
In fact, he was reportedly in line to be the next head coach of the Washington Commanders.
However, according to insider Lake Lewis Jr., Johnson wanted former Commanders quarterback Sam Howell to be the team’s starting quarterback, but general manager Adam Peters wanted to draft a quarterback.

It looks like things could work out with both sides electing to go their separate ways.
The Commanders are preparing to play in the divisional round against Johnson and the Detroit Lions after a remarkable first season with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn.
Johnson will likely be a head coach soon because of his work as the offensive mastermind in the Motor City.
This season, the Lions ranked first in team offense, second in passing offense, and sixth in rushing offense.
They were also among the few teams to turn the ball over less than 15 times.
Johnson was the one who helped turn Jared Goff back into a franchise quarterback again after it felt like his career was spinning out of control.
Once Detroit’s season is over, Johnson will undoubtedly have plenty of suitors for a potential head-coaching gig.
Again, it feels like the situation worked out for both Johnson and the Commanders.
