CXMT Shares Fall 7.8% as Global Macro Sell-Off Dampens Profit Turnaround
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) shares fell 7.8% on Monday, October 19, 2026, closing at 41.52 yuan on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The decline brought the stock to its lowest level since its market debut in July, despite the company reporting a financial turnaround that moved the chipmaker from a multibillion-yuan loss to record profitability.
For the first nine months of 2026, CXMT forecast revenue between 265 billion and 270 billion yuan, representing an eightfold increase over the 32.08 billion yuan recorded during the same period in 2025. The company expects net profit for the period to reach between 131 billion and 132.5 billion yuan, reversing a loss of 5.28 billion yuan from the previous year.
Market volatility has impacted chipmaker valuations despite strong operational growth.
Valuation Pressure and Market Sentiment
The share price drop coincides with a broader global technology sell-off triggered by a 2% decline in the Nasdaq during the previous Friday’s session. This macro-economic pressure has weighed heavily on Asian semiconductor stocks as investors reassess the sustainability of high valuations tied to artificial intelligence demand. According to the South China Morning Post, the decline reflects a gap between CXMT’s operational success and investor skepticism regarding global market stability.
CXMT’s July 27, 2026, initial public offering was the largest A-share listing of the year, raising 57.92 billion yuan. While the company’s earnings have surged, the high expectations set during the IPO have made the stock sensitive to broader sector volatility. Regional rivals, including Samsung and SK Hynix, have faced similar downward pressure despite reporting strong forecasts, suggesting a sector-wide shift in sentiment toward chipmakers.
Market Share Growth and Corporate Response
Despite the stock market volatility, CXMT’s fundamental position in the memory market has strengthened. The company captured 10% of global DRAM revenue in the third quarter of 2026, doubling its 5% market share from one year earlier. This milestone positions CXMT as the world’s fourth-largest supplier of dynamic random-access memory.
In an effort to stabilize the stock price, CXMT Chairman Zhu Yiming proposed a share buyback program. The proposal outlines a plan to repurchase between 1 billion and 2 billion yuan worth of shares over a 12-month period. The move is intended to signal confidence in the company’s long-term value following the record-breaking nine-month performance figures.
