Romanian F-16s Neutralize Two High-Speed Drones Over the Black Sea

Romanian F-16 fighter jets intercepted and destroyed two drones over the Black Sea on Saturday, October 17, 2026. This engagement marks the first confirmed instance of the Romanian Air Force using kinetic force to neutralize unauthorized aerial vehicles following a series of airspace violations and recent attacks on regional commercial shipping.

The mission began at 17:43 local time when the F-16s were scrambled from the 86th Air Base Borcea. According to official reports, the first drone was neutralized at 18:01 southeast of the port of Sulina. Four minutes later, at 18:05, the pilots destroyed a second drone to the east of Sulina. The targets were identified as jet-powered variants of the Geran drone family, capable of reaching speeds up to 600 km/h—a significant technical upgrade over previous propeller-driven models that makes interception considerably more challenging.

The drones were neutralized at 18:01 and 18:05 local time near the port of .

This defensive action follows the implementation of Law No. 73 of 2025, which provides the specific legal framework for the Romanian military to down unauthorized drones within national airspace. Previously, military responses were often constrained by legal ambiguities regarding the use of force against unmanned systems. The shift to active interception comes amid a week that saw eight radar-detected incursions and four brief violations of Romanian sovereign airspace.

The escalation in the Black Sea has already impacted maritime commerce. Earlier this week, drone strikes hit two commercial vessels: the tanker YARA J on October 14 and the tanker Wine Trader on October 15. The attack on the Wine Trader left seven sailors missing and has raised alarms regarding the security of the Sulina Canal, a vital waterway for regional trade. These incidents have forced a “zero-tolerance” posture from Romanian authorities to protect both territorial integrity and economic interests.

Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu stated that the incident would be addressed by the North Atlantic Council during an upcoming meeting this Tuesday. The engagement signals a new phase in NATO’s eastern flank security, as member states increasingly move to actively defend their borders against high-speed drone incursions.
